Top Trends in Interior Design for 2023
We’ve seen it all and we’ve seen how trends change over time. In our experience, we’ve seen certain design patterns and trends with both residential and commercial properties and have compiled some of the top interior design trends that we, homeowners, business owners, and interior designers all have liked the most recently.
Statement Ceilings
They are often overlooked, but in 2023, ceilings are becoming a focal point in interior design. Bold paint colors, textured wallpapers, decorative moldings, or unique lighting fixtures are being used to draw attention upward and add visual interest.
Maximalism Is In
The 1970s was a groovy decade and its bold colors and patterns are making a comeback.
While a bit of nostalgia can sometimes border on kitsch, the design world is once again falling in love with maximalist décor – bold patterns, rich textures, and mixing different styles and eras are celebrated. This trend allows for more personal expression and eclectic combinations.
Expect to see more terracotta, sleek chrome, glamorous velvet, and bold wallpapers. The ’70s were all about thrilling, bold designs with an emphasis on comfort and coziness.
“The ’70s was comforting, it was comfortable and it was very human. I think as we are spending so much time at home right now, we are all looking for this in our home spaces,” said Australian designer Sarah Ellison. “We are coming off the back of the Scandinavian minimalism trend so this is the antithesis to that.”
A Return to Traditional Aesthetics
We’re noticing a comeback to what feels familiar – or traditional if you will. More contemporary pieces with antique/vintage furniture, but in a functional setting. That is to say, a new traditional trend.
“Expect English roll arm sofas, wingbacks, simple dining tables based on antique styles and pieces with detail and some history. For materials, we’re going to see a lot more natural materials become popular again. Marble, real wood, linens, mohair—things that feel more organic and nice to the touch.” – Erin Gates.
Biophilic Design
Expect to see a continued focus on regaining our connection to the natural world through the use of biophilic design principles.
Biophilic design places an emphasis on connecting our inherent need to affiliate with nature in our modern and urban environment. At its core, biophilic design connects inhabitants with nature. It emphasizes natural elements such as cross-ventilation and natural lighting as well as places a focus on creating a healthy and productive space.
Biophilia is known to enhance creativity and clarity of thought, reduce stress, and improve well-being (which we could all use a little more of these days).
Smart Home Integration
With the rapid advancement of technology, smart home integration is becoming more prevalent.
Home automation systems that control lighting, heating, security, and entertainment are seamlessly integrated into the design, offering convenience and customization.
Bold and Beautiful Patterns
When it comes to walls, many designers are now moving away from neutrals and using more vibrant colors and daring wallpaper. The previous trend of using muted colors has given way to showcasing more bright, cheerful hues.
“Wallpaper continues to be a dominant element in interiors, with strong patterns and more textured materials being used to create spaces that envelop and cocoon you.” Timothy Corrigan.
That’s not to say natural, neutral colors are out, as they most certainly still have their place. It just helps the bold and the beautiful stand out a bit more because too much of it and you can overdo it.
Curved Furnishings
2023 is here to tell you to embrace this shapely trend. Curves, when done right, do so much for any focal point or interior – whether it’s at home or at the office.
“A curved form is subconsciously read as safe, friendly, and welcoming. With everyone feeling a bit precious I think those softer shapes and angles will still be a big interior design trend in 2023 in furniture as well as architecture.” – Sarah Sherman Samuel
Curves help us feel comfortable and relaxed, and give off a feeling of being soft and inviting.
“Furnishings of white oak with curves bring a fresh and soft wavy feeling. From curved corners within walls and cabinets to curved backs of sofas, dining chairs, and arched cabinets, the angular line of furnishing is softening.” — Michelle Harrison-McAllister
Sustainability
“Green” is in and it’s here to stay.
As homeowners continue to become more environmentally conscious, it’s only natural that interior designers are incorporating sustainability into their designs. With this current design trend in mind, look for secondhand items including coffee tables, dressers, and bookshelves before purchasing a brand-new item.
“Sustainability has become a major issue for everyone, as it should. Looking into the sustainability of everything is a must and it’s really excellent that so many designers are trying to learn what the best materials are to use for the long-term health of our ecosystem.” – Robert and Courtney Novogratz.
While vintage certainly isn’t a recent trend, the fact that it’s been stylish for so long speaks to its sustainability.
“Whenever I can use vintage, I will. From a design standpoint, vintage is the protagonist of every room—it has the power to influence the storytelling and direction. Their patina brings a touchable texture and warmth to every space, not to mention a sacred sentimentality. But aside from their decorative propensity, these rare antiquities are stylishly sustainable. By repurposing the old, the damaged, the jagged into something new, we’re reducing our footprint while bringing a rich sense of history and spirit into any space.” – Athena Calderone
As there is a growing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly design, there is also a preference for natural materials such as wood, stone, bamboo, cork, and rattan. These materials bring warmth, texture, and a sense of connection to nature into interior spaces.
